Signs the Forklift Needs Service

October 10, 2019 by Meg Crone

Forklifts are a crucial tool being used daily in the operations of most businesses. When it comes to managing costs effectively and protecting the value of your equipment, it is important to assure your forklift is serviced when needed. Routine maintenance and required service can prevent accidents and confirm that your forklifts are operating properly. There are several key signs that your forklift needs service:

Damaged Forks

Worn, cracked, or bent forks can lead to damaged loads, accidents, injuries, and financial burdens.

A Stuck Mast

If a mast jerks or catches when moving up or down, there could be a variety of problems, from not enough hydraulic fluid to several damaged parts.

Damage to the chain

When a chain is damaged, it will lead to chain failure and other damage of the forklift. Signs of chain damage weak spots, such as link plates, pinheads, and any elongation of the chain.

Oil Leak

If you notice a visible trail of oil, check the external and internal parts of the forklift for leaks. An oil leak is hazardous for pedestrians and can also destroy parts of the forklift.

Rough Idling during Acceleration

The forklift may require a tune up, if there is rough when the forklift operator accelerates.

Slow Hydraulic or Mechanical Response when using the lift, tilt, or attachment functions

High emissions

Black, blue, or white smoke from the exhaust and strong odor indicate that high emissions.

Inconsistent braking

Brakes that squeal or lock may be need to replaced or serviced.

A rough ride

If the forklift operator experiences a rougher than usual ride, the tires may require replacement from wear and tear.

Cracked or brittle hoses

Engine turning slowly

A new battery, starter, or alternator may be needed when the forklift’s engine turns slower.

High engine temperature

Engines that have a temperature higher than average should be serviced immediately. That safety hazards of high temperatures can be fatal to the forklifts and its operators.
