Unplanned downtime costs $6,000 - $22,000 per hour depending on your industry. The most frequent cause of unplanned downtime? Equipment repair.
One of the easiest ways to avoid unplanned downtime is to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. If your operation services its Toyota forklifts in-house instead of outsourcing, scroll down for a list of essential parts to keep on hand.
Have a large fleet? Ask about our parts consignment program.

Commonly-Replaced Toyota Forklift Parts
Here are the Toyota forklift parts that need to be replaced most often.
Every year or 2000 hours:
- Wheel cylinder rubber parts
- Master cylinder rubber parts
Every two years or 4000 hours:
- Power steering hoses and rubber parts
- Reservoir tank hose
- Hydraulic hose
- Fuel hose (replace every two years or 4000 hours)
Every three years or 6000 hours:
- Lift chain
Dust, chemicals or working in inclement weather can shorten the lifespan of the mast chain. Operators should check the chain as part of their pre-shift inspection for signs of wear, but a professional inspection is recommended every year or 1000 hours. A technician can ensure the tension is balanced on both sides and use a gauge to check for link elongation.
Every five years or 10,000 hours:
- Swing lock cylinder (SAS)
You may have noticed two essential parts missing from the list above...
- Forklift tires
- and Forklift batteries (electric forklifts only)
We're not giving a replacement timeframe for tires and batteries because, as the saying goes, “your mileage will vary.” In the case of tires, that’s literal.
The type of tire you use, the surface the forklift operates on and many other factors affect your forklift tire’s lifespan. Learn more about when to replace your forklift tires and how to make them last longer.
Similarly, the type of forklift battery you use (lead acid vs. lithium-ion) affects how long it lasts. Lithium-ion forklift batteries typically last 5-7 years, while lead acid batteries last five years at most and only if properly maintained.
All Toyota Forklift Parts Include a Warranty
When choosing between generic versus OEM parts, keep in mind: Toyota forklift parts come with a 4000 hour/two-year warranty. In the unlikely event a part fails, Toyota will replace the part at no charge and cover the cost of the repair (if the work is done by a Toyota-Certified Technician).
If you bought a Toyota forklift because of the truck’s reputation for longevity, don’t compromise its integrity by using cheap parts. Keep your Toyota a Toyota. Future You will be glad you did, especially if you plan to sell the forklift down the road.
